Start any do it yourself project with your eyes wide open

Doing it yourself (DIY) projects has the potential to save you money on home improvements, but be sure to be realistic rather than over-optimistic when you are considering a DIY project. Some of the Minnesota homeowners insurance claims that are filed each year are the result of DIY jobs that were poorly planned.

Stop and think before you start knocking down walls, buying expensive power tools and materials at the hardware store or embarking on a complex repair job.

• Do you know what you are doing? Unless the job is simple and straightforward, learning skills on the job is not recommended. Tasks that require experience and specialized skills, such as repairing an electric water heater, should only be undertaken by qualified contractors. Attempting work that you are unqualified to do is unsafe, and may even be illegal.
• Are you sure that you will be able to complete the job in the time you have available? DIY jobs often take much longer to do than we anticipate, so consider outsourcing an urgent repair job to a contractor if you are unsure about your level of skills and experience.
• Are you physically fit enough to do the job? Many DIY enthusiasts underestimate the levels of fitness, strength and endurance needed. Allow time for breaks when planning a DIY project to avoid running out of steam before the job is complete.

Check with your agent or insurer if you are uncertain what home repairs are covered by Minnesota homeowners insurance. Make sure that you have adequate resources – including skills, time and physical fitness – before you embark on any do it yourself repair project.
